Science Project/Science Experiments
To separate a mixture
of mud and water by filtration
( (1)
Mix the mud and water into the clear glass
beaker.
(2) Take a circular filter paper and fold it in half, and
then in half again so that you get a cone shape.
(3) Place the conical filter paper inside the funnel.
(3) Put the other glass beaker below the funnel.
(4) Pour the mud water (brown in colour) slowly into the
cone with the help of glass rod.
(5) Watch it drip through the filter paper and funnel.
(6) Clear water is collected in the other beaker placed
below the funnel. You will observe the mud in the filter paper.
Note: When we poured the
mud water into the filter paper, the mud didn't go through the filter, but the
water did. This is because of the tiny holes in the filter paper.
The substance that remains
in the filter paper (mud) is called residue.
The substance that is
collected after filtration is called filtrate. (pure water after removing
impurities)
This method of separating
mud from water is called filtration.
