Details:
1. Take three glass jars, one test tube, connecting glass tubes, lime water, Potassium Hydroxide solution and air pump as shown in the set up.
2. Put some potassium hydroxide solution in test tube A.
3. Put some lime water in glass jar B and D.
4. Connect a suction pump through glass jar D
5. Take some germinating pea seeds and place it in glass jar C.
6. Connect the apparatus through connecting glass tubes as shown.
7. Use suction pump to suck in air through the apparatus. As the air passes through test tube A, potassium hydroxide solution absorbs the carbon dioxide from the air.
8. Then the air passes through jar B containing lime water. The lime water does not turn milky, which shows that the air does not contain carbon dioxide.
9. Now what do you observe?
10. The lime water in conical jar D turns milky.
11. This shows that germinating seeds produces carbon dioxide during respiration.
