Sedimentation and Decantation Sedimentation

Sedimentation is a form of separating substances. The process of separating insoluble substance (a substance that will not dissolve in a solvent) in a liquid by allowing it to settle at the bottle of a solvent is called sedimentation. An example of this is if you mix sand and water, the sand will settle at the bottom of the glass after being mixed in because it does not dissolve in water. The impure substances settled down at the bottom are called sediments. Decanting - This process of decantation involves pouring a clear liquid left at the top without disturbing the sediments.
