How to make a solenoid? Solenoid is a coil of insulated wire around a hollow cylindrical core which becomes an electromagnet when electric current flows through it. • Take a copper wire and wound it around a cylindrical tube. • Remove the insulation on the wire at the two ends • Connect the two ends of the wire to the battery through a switch. • Place the small iron nails near the coil. • When you switch on the current, the iron nails will cling to the coil. This is because the coil becomes an electromagnet. • When the battery is disconnected, the coil is no more an electromagnet. The iron nails will not cling to the nail. The strength of a solenoid can be increased by (1) Winding copper wire around the magnetic material like soft iron (2) Increasing the number of copper wire turns (3) Increasing the current in the circuit
