Plant Systems- The Root

Shoot System:

The aboveground or the aerial part of flowering plants constitutes the shoot system, which includes erect stems on which are attached leaves, flowers, and buds.

All flowering plants have two main systems: Root System and Shoot System

Root System:

The root is that part of a plant that typically lies below the surface of the soil.

Its primary functions are:

ü  Roots anchor the plants in soil.

ü  Roots absorb water and dissolved minerals from the soil and conduct these to the stem, and store as food reserve.

ü  Roots bind the soil particle and thus prevent soil erosion.
