Why pencil looks bent in water?
Effects of Refraction
Apparent bending of pencil
Take a glass of water and a pencil.
Place the pencil into the water
Look at the pencil from the top.
Now look at the pencil from the side.
Did you notice any changes in its appearance?
The pencil appears to be sharply bent at the surface of the water.
Light “bends” when it passes though one medium to another of a different density. The light is first travelling through the air, and then it passes through the water.
Since the water is more dense than the air, the light rays bend in the water. This makes the pencil seem to bend as well.
The process of light bending is called refraction.
